Home Security Tips and Tricks

How to Keep Your Home Secure

According to the FBI, there were 522,426 reported burglaries in 2020 alone. Even though COVID-19 drastically reduced those numbers from previous years, it’s still important to be prepared to avoid becoming part of the statistics. Here are some home security tips to keep your property safe from unexpected intruders.

Install a Security System

The first on the list, and arguably most important, is to install an alarm system in your home. Though an alarm won’t stop intruders from getting in, it will alert the police immediately. Remember, the alarm can only work if engaged, so be sure to turn it on at night and when no one’s home. Additionally, place signs in your yard stating that you have a security system in place.

Keep Your Doors Locked at All Times

Most homeowners lock their doors at night, but it’s important to keep them locked during the day, too, especially if you’re out for the day. Some burglars target homes when tenants leave for work in the early morning. According to the 2010 report by the U.S. Department of Justice, burglaries were 17% more likely to occur between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. So, be sure to keep those doors locked all day.

Keep Your Yard Clean and Orderly

It’s important to maintain your yard and put away tools and toys at the end of the day. You don’t want thieves to have any access to items that could be used to break windows. Also, never leave a ladder in your yard; that’s a sure-fire way to give an intruder access to a higher window.

Keep Your Shrubbery Trimmed

Bushes and low-hanging trees give thieves a place to hide, so be sure to trim any excess foliage. Pay special attention to bushes near windows and doors.

Light Your Property

Burglars target dark homes as a way to mask their identity and actions. Prevent break-ins by lighting the outside of your property. For better protection, install motion sensor lights that activate when someone walks by. This is a good way to be alerted of someone’s presence, even if it’s just a raccoon.

Install Security Cameras

Cameras are a good way to keep intruders at bay, and in the event of a break-in, the police will have an easier time identifying the suspect. Make sure to place cameras all around your house and at the front door for extra home security. With Amazon becoming more popular, thieves have begun targeting homes with packages left on the front steps. Always try your best to bring in packages as quickly as possible, and never leave big boxes out overnight. If you’re out of town, ask a neighbor to pick it up for you.

Purchase a Safe

Every homeowner should have a safe for their expensive jewelry, personal documents, and sentimental items. Additionally, if you have firearms, buy a separate safe to keep them out of reach of children and possible intruders.

Whether you’re a new or experienced homeowner, home security is a must to keep you and your family safe from harm. Items are replaceable, but physical and emotional damage can be lifelong, so always be proactive. For more safety tips or to be connected with a HomeHunt professional, contact us today!
